Department of Economics Arranges a Seminar on Macroeconomic Volatility and Global Market Impact of Looming Trade War

The Department of Economics at East West University (EWU) organized an insightful seminar titled "Macroeconomic Volatility: Looming Trade War and Impact on Global Markets" on April 21, 2025. The seminar took place at the S.M. Nousher Ali Lecture Gallery at EWU and featured Ms. Kona Lasker Haque, an esteemed member of the Board of Trustees at EWU, a distinguished economist, and the Head of Research at ED&F Man in the UK.

The seminar focused on the escalating tariff disputes, particularly those initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding imports to the USA from various countries, along with the retaliatory measures imposed by nations such as China. Ms. Haque provided a comprehensive analysis of these developments and their potential implications for the global economic landscape. She highlighted the current state of the world economy in light of this escalating trade friction and the associated macroeconomic volatility.

Professor Dr. Shams Rahman, Vice Chancellor of East West University, opened the session with welcome remarks that set a tone of intellectual engagement for attendees. Professor Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees at EWU, presided over the program and delivered a thought-provoking address, emphasizing the importance of understanding these global economic shifts.

Dr. Muntasir Chaudhury, Associate Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Economics, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the esteemed guest speaker and the engaged audience for their participation. The seminar also featured a dynamic Question & Answer session, allowing attendees to explore the complexities of the issue and interact directly with Ms. Haque.

The event was attended by Mrs. Najma Ahmed, a member of the Board of Trustees; Mr. Nowshad Shamsul Arefin, a member of the Board of Trustees; Dr. Muhammad A. Mannan, also a member of the Board of Trustees, the Pro-Vice Chancellor; the Treasurer; faculty members; and a significant number of students from the Department of Economics at East West University. This event highlights the university's commitment to fostering a critical understanding of global economic trends within its community.
